Durmitor is a truly spectacular place, so wonderful that you’ll think you’re dreaming. If you are planning to visit Montenegro, you should not miss to visit the National Park Durmitor and stay at Hotel GORSKE OCI.
Because of its indescribable beauty and untouched nature, Durmitor was proclaimed a National Park as early as 1952. National Park Durmitor spreads from the mountain massif of Durmitor with canyons of the rivers Tara, Susica and Draga to the canyon valley of the river Komarnica. Giant Durmitor abounds in imposing mountaintops and numerous glacier lakes surrounded by rich evergreen forests. Fast and clear rivers have gifted Durmitor with magnificent canyons, among them the exceptional Tara River canyon as one of the most beautiful in the world. Plentiful flora and fauna of Durmitor attracts many nature lovers.
The region of Durmitor is the most important part of the Dinara range of mountains, characterized by high tops, abundant forests, deep gorges. The Canyon of Tara is the largest in Europe and has over 1500 kinds of flora and 130 kinds of birds.
There are 17 glacier Lakes in the Park which also has the highest mountain top in Montenegro – Bobotov kuk (2522 m). Since 1980, the Park and the Canyon of Tara are under the protection of UNESCO.
In 1977 the Canyon was proclaimed a world ecological reserve.
Seven zones of the Park are among special protected areas (ICUM):
- Uncut forest of fir
- Black pine at Crna poda
- Canyon of Susica
- Region of lake Barno
- Region of Lake Zaboljsko
- Canyon of Tara
- Milling stream
A large number of the 314 protected animals in Montenegro, including 163 kinds of birds, live in region of Durmitor.
